Obi Cubana Rejects Link to Howard-Taylor Drug Trafficking Allegations

Nigerian businessman and socialite Obi Cubana has rejected attempts to associate him with the drug trafficking and money-laundering allegations facing former Liberian Vice-President Jewel Howard-Taylor.

The clarification came after photographs of Obi Cubana, businessman E-Money, and real estate entrepreneur Kennedy “Ned” Okonkwo meeting Howard-Taylor in Liberia resurfaced on social media following her arrest and subsequent criminal charges.

Why Obi Cubana's name surfaced

Howard-Taylor was arrested on August 19, 2026, after reportedly being stopped while attempting to leave Liberia through Roberts International Airport.

Liberian authorities subsequently charged the former vice-president with several offences, including alleged drug trafficking, unlawful importation and distribution of controlled substances, criminal conspiracy, facilitation and money laundering. The allegations remain subject to judicial determination.

Following the development, social media users began circulating photographs from a 2021 meeting between Howard-Taylor and the Nigerian businessmen.

The photographs prompted speculation about whether the businessmen had any connection to the alleged criminal network.

Cubana Group: It was a legitimate business mission

The Cubana Group, which is associated with Obi Cubana, strongly rejected the suggestion that the meeting demonstrated any involvement in Howard-Taylor's alleged activities.

According to the group, the 2021 visit was an openly conducted trade and investment mission aimed at exploring business opportunities in Liberia.

The delegation reportedly considered potential investments in areas including tourism, hospitality, real estate, agriculture and youth development.

The group stressed that Howard-Taylor was Liberia's sitting vice-president at the time and was actively involved in attracting investors to the country.

It argued that meeting a serving government official during an investment mission should not be interpreted as evidence of involvement in criminal activities that the official is alleged to have committed years later.

Howard-Taylor previously described the visit

The Cubana Group also pointed to comments Howard-Taylor herself made during a 2023 interview.

According to reports, she described Obi Cubana as part of a broader trade delegation that travelled to Liberia in search of business opportunities, particularly in the tourism sector.

She said her role was to showcase Liberia's investment opportunities and encourage legitimate partnerships capable of contributing to the country's economy.

Contemporary reports also described the Nigerian delegation as exploring potential projects, including a proposed five-star hotel and agricultural investments.

Social media speculation

The resurfacing of the old photographs has generated considerable debate online, with some social media users questioning the nature of the Nigerian businessmen's relationship with Howard-Taylor.

However, the existence of photographs showing individuals meeting does not, by itself, establish involvement in criminal activity.

The Cubana Group described attempts to connect Obi Cubana to the current drug allegations as speculative and unfair, arguing that the 2021 meeting was a normal business engagement.

Howard-Taylor's case continues

The allegations against Howard-Taylor come amid a major Liberian investigation into an alleged transnational narcotics network.

Liberian authorities have also charged several foreign nationals in absentia over their alleged involvement in the network. One of the individuals named by prosecutors has previously been accused by Croatian authorities of involvement in a cocaine-smuggling network.

Authorities have urged the public and media to avoid speculation while the investigation and legal proceedings continue.

For Obi Cubana, the controversy is centered on whether an open business meeting held in 2021 can reasonably be connected to allegations now facing Howard-Taylor in 2026.

The Cubana Group maintains that there is no evidence establishing such a connection and insists that the Nigerian delegation's visit was strictly focused on legitimate investment opportunities.
