Putin Backs Iran, Says Russia Admires Its Courage and Resilience

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed support for Iran, telling President Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow admires the courage and resilience of the Iranian people as Tehran continues to face pressure and military confrontation with the United States.

Putin made the remarks on Tuesday, September 1, during a meeting with Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Putin Praises Iran’s Resistance

During the meeting, Putin said Russia stood in solidarity with the Iranian people and praised their determination to defend what Moscow described as their national interests.

“We admire your courage and resilience in defending your national interests,” Putin told Pezeshkian, according to Russia's TASS news agency.

Putin also said relations between Russia and Iran were developing across multiple areas, while stressing that Moscow was attempting to provide Tehran with assistance during the current difficult period.

Russia Says It Is Supplying Iran With Goods

Putin said Russia was supplying Iran with necessary goods as the country deals with the consequences of its confrontation with Washington.

“We are trying to provide you with the necessary assistance,” Putin said, adding that Russia was supplying Iran with needed goods.

The remarks underline the increasingly close strategic relationship between Moscow and Tehran as both governments oppose what they describe as unilateral US pressure.

Putin Calls Iran-US Truce Fragile

The Russian president also addressed the ceasefire memorandum agreed between Iran and the United States in June.

Putin said Moscow had welcomed the agreement but described the resulting truce as unstable and fragile.

His comments came after renewed hostilities between Washington and Tehran. Iranian President Pezeshkian said Tuesday that Iran would immediately reciprocate if the United States returned to its commitments under the June memorandum.

Pezeshkian Thanks Putin

Pezeshkian, for his part, thanked Putin for Russia's support during the conflict and the sanctions imposed on Iran.

The Iranian president has also said Tehran and Moscow could work together to resist what he described as US unilateralism.

The Putin-Pezeshkian meeting therefore comes at a particularly sensitive moment, with diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict facing renewed challenges.

Growing Russia-Iran Cooperation

The meeting demonstrates the continuing strengthening of relations between Russia and Iran, particularly as both countries face pressure from Washington.
